CBD Oil for TMJ
If you experience pain or discomfort when you use the muscles in your jaw, you may have problems with your TMJ or temporomandibular joint. At Lauren Becker DDS, PC, we provide several treatment options for patients who suffer from problems with their TMJ, also known as temporomandibular joint disorders (TMD). In addition to traditional treatment methods, we may also recommend CBD oil. Recent studies have shown that patients with TMD may benefit from the natural pain-relieving properties of CBD oil.
What Is TMJ/TMD?The temporomandibular joint is a complex system of muscles, ligaments, discs, and bones that connect the upper and lower jaws. The joint acts as the hinge responsible for moving the lower jaw forward, backward, and side-to-side.
If you suffer from TMD, you may experience the following symptoms:
• |
Headaches, earaches, or pressure behind the eyes
|
• |
A popping or clicking sound when you open or close your jaw
|
• |
Significant pain when you open your jaw wide or chew food
|
• |
Lock jaw in the open or closed position
|
• |
Tenderness in the muscles that control your jaw
|
• |
A change or malocclusion in your bite |
There is no exact cause for TMD because there are many signs and symptoms. This can make the condition hard to diagnose. During a consultation visit, Dr. Lauren Becker will make a proper diagnosis by taking a complete medical history and conducting a clinical examination. This may also include x-rays.
Traditional Treatments for TMDTreating TMD can be as difficult as diagnosing it. While there is no single cure, we may recommend one of the following:
• |
Reducing the harmful effects of clenching or grinding your teeth in your sleep. Bruxism or teeth grinding can be combated with a custom-made appliance similar to a sports guard. The appliance will keep your upper and lower teeth in their proper position during sleep. This can also prevent further damage to the enamel.
|
• |
Relaxation techniques that help you reduce stress and control muscle tension in the jaw.
|
• |
Medications that eliminate or reduce muscle spasms.
|
• |
Medications that eliminate or reduce pain, such as over the counter pain relievers like Advil. |
What Is CBD Oil?In recent years, our patients have expressed a desire for more natural alternatives to synthetic medications. Thanks to recent medical advancements, we are now able to suggest CBD oil as an effective alternative. CBD oil, or cannabidiol, is a chemical that occurs naturally in the cannabis plant. The CBD is extracted from the plant and separated from the most active ingredient in cannabis, delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). While THC is considered a mind-altering chemical, CBD is not psychoactive. Instead, it produces effects in the body that target certain receptors and provide natural pain relief and anti-inflammatory properties.
CBD oil can relieve the pain caused by TMD by easing muscle tension and reducing inflammation. The best benefit of CBD oil is its direct pain relief. By applying the oil directly to the sore areas, you can experience pain relief in just minutes. Some patients also choose to vaporize the oil during inhalation. Electronic vaporizers are the fastest application for CBD oil.
